The ruling on one who leaves his town as a traveler, prays the midday and afternoon prayers combined and shortened, then returns to his town without completing the journey
A man left a city as a traveler, then stopped and combined the midday and afternoon prayers, shortening them. Then something unexpected happened, or something like that, and he returned. Does the afternoon prayer become void for him?
It is not obligatory for him; because he prayed a prayer that he was commanded to perform and permitted to do. Whoever performs an act of worship that he is permitted to do, he is not required to repeat it; because Allah the Exalted does not obligate a servant to perform two prayers or two acts of worship? Even if we assume he combined them by advancing the prayer, leaving before the midday prayer and entering the time of midday, and he prayed the midday and afternoon prayers combined by advancing, thinking he would continue the journey, then he changed his mind and returned, and the time of the afternoon prayer arrived while he was in his town, does he repeat the prayer?Answer: He does not repeat the prayer; because his conscience is cleared by his first prayer, since he prayed a prayer that he was permitted to do.

The questioner: Does he pray a voluntary prayer with the congregation? The Shaykh: It is not obligatory. If he attends the mosque, he prays with the congregation.
