A man traveled, and when he left the town, he combined and shortened the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers, then returned due to an urgent matter. Is he required to repeat the prayer?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
A man left the city as a traveler, meaning he went beyond the city.

The Shaykh : The Prophet's city.

The questioner : Not his own city.

The Shaykh : His own city, yes.

The questioner : He left, stopped, and prayed, meaning he combined the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers together with shortening. Then something urgent happened, or something like that, and he returned. Is the 'Asr prayer dropped for him?

The Shaykh : Yes, this is what he says: If a man travels, leaves the town, and prays Zuhr and 'Asr combined and shortened, and then he decides to return, is he required to repeat the prayer? The answer is: He is not required to, because he prayed a prayer that he was commanded to perform and permitted to do. And anyone who performs a worship that is permitted to him is not required to repeat it, because Allah the Exalted does not obligate a servant to perform two prayers or two acts of worship. Did you understand? Now, suppose he combined them by advancing the time, leaving before the Zuhr prayer, and the time for Zuhr entered, so he prayed Zuhr and 'Asr as an advanced combination, intending to continue his journey. Then he decided to return, and the time for 'Asr entered while he was in his town. Does he repeat the prayer? The answer is: He does not repeat the prayer, because his responsibility was discharged by his first prayer, since he prayed a prayer that was permitted to him. Yes.

The questioner : Does he pray a voluntary prayer with the congregation?

The Shaykh : It is not obligatory. If he is present in the mosque, he prays with the congregation; otherwise, it is not required.
