Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (And in Thamud when it was said to them, “Enjoy yourselves until a time”)
We had previously reached the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Surat al-Dhariyat: 43] Thamud: They are those to whom Allah sent His Prophet Salih (peace and blessings be upon him), so he admonished them, reminded them, and made a sign for them, which was the she-camel that Allah the Exalted honored by attributing it to His noble Self,Where He Blessed and Exalted said: [Surat al-Shams: 13] meaning: Beware of the she-camel of Allah, lest you meddle with it or deny it,And this she-camel had a well from which it drank, called: the well of the she-camel, and they have [Surat al-Shu'ara: 155] to drink from, so the she-camel would drink on one day and they would drink on one day, and it is mentioned regarding this she-camel that no one came to draw water from this well on the day it drank except that he took in place of its drinking a portion of its milk equal to what he drank, so Allah knows best whether this is the reality or if it differs, but in any case, this she-camel is undoubtedly a she-camel unlike other she-camels, for it was a sign among the signs of Allah Mighty and Majestic, but they lied and refused, and Salih (peace and blessings be upon him) threatened them that they would enjoy themselves in their land for three days, but they persisted in their disbelief and denial,Therefore they said: [Surat al-Dhariyat: 43] .
And their dwellings are known now, existing in a place called al-Hijr, and it is now called the dwellings of Thamud, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by them on his way to Tabuk, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) hastened when he passed through these dwellings, lowered his head, and forbade his Ummah from entering these places—the places of the punished ones—unless they were weeping,He said: (If you are not weeping, do not enter them, lest you be struck by what struck them) And His saying: (lest you be struck by what struck them) does not necessarily mean that what is intended is the physical punishment that struck them; it may be that what is intended is both the physical punishment that struck them and the turning away and disbelief that struck them,If someone were to say: Indeed, there are people who go to these places while not weeping and are not struck by anything.
We say: The answer to this is from two angles: The first angle is that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not affirm that they would be struck by this,But he said: out of fear or anxiety that they would be struck by what struck these people.
The second aspect: That we say: It is not necessary that what is intended by this is that they be taken with what these people were taken with of the apparent physical punishment, which is the earthquake and the shout that killed them to the last of them; it may be that what is intended by this is the disease of the heart, which is arrogance, turning away, and rejecting the truth.
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:43] This time is three days.
We had previously reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And in Thamud, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
وَفِي ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا حَتَّى حِينٍAnd the messenger of Allah [Salih] said to them, "[Do not harm] the she-camel of Allah or [prevent her from] her drink."
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَاa [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.
شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍAnd in Thamud, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
