The Shaykh Al-Albani’s explanation that the Sunnah is the means to understanding the Qur'an and the extent of disagreement among Muslims.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The point is that knowing the Sunnah requires knowledge of these two sciences. Whoever knows the Sunnah understands the Qur'an, and whoever does not know the Sunnah cannot understand the Qur'an, because Allah said in the Qur'an:
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them وَأَنْزَلْنَا إِلَيْكَ الذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ
[An-Nahl 16:44]
. So the verse contains an explainer and an explained. The explained is the Qur'an, and the explainer is the Messenger of Allah, meaning his Sunnah (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, to understand the Qur'an, one must understand the Sunnah, and to understand the Sunnah, one must have two sciences: al-jarh wa al-ta'dil (the critique and vindication of narrators) and the terminology of hadith. Today, there are fourteen centuries between us and the Messenger, and disagreement among Muslims is at its peak. Here, too, a pause is necessary. The disagreement among Muslims is not as some of you may hear in universities, where this bad reality is glossed over by saying that the disagreement is in the branches and not in the fundamentals. I say, with regret, that this is misleading Muslims and diverting them from knowing their bad reality when one of them says, "The disagreement among Muslims is in the branches, not in the fundamentals." This is like the ostrich, which is cited as an example of foolishness. It is a very large body, like a camel; you have at least seen its picture, if not the animal itself. They cite it as an example because when it sees the hunter, it puts its head in the sand, out of foolishness, thinking that if it does not see the hunter, then the hunter does not see it. And so the example of the ostrich is cited.
The student : The ostrich.
