Speaking on the fact that the Sunnah is the explanation of the Qur'an.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And among the wonders and oddities is that when these people deny the Sunnah, they overlook the fact that there are many verses that cannot be understood, interpreted, or explained except through the Messenger (peace be upon him). Otherwise, what is the function of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) after he has conveyed this Qur'an to the people? Did the function of the Messenger (peace be upon him) end merely by conveying the words of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and His Qur'an to the people? The answer is: No; for Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says, among other things, addressing the Messenger (peace be upon him):
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them
[An-Nahl 16:44]
, and We revealed to you the Reminder, which is the Qur'an; why? So that you may fulfill the duty of explaining and clarifying this Qur'an that was revealed to you.
There is no doubt that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued for twenty-three years performing this other function that Allah explicitly stated in this verse. These are two functions: the first is conveying this Qur'an to the people; the Messenger (peace be upon him) conveys this Qur'an to the people as it was revealed. The other function is explaining this Qur'an to these people and clarifying it for them, in obedience to this command in the noble verse:
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them
[An-Nahl 16:44]
. There are many verses that cannot be applied except by resorting to and relying on the explanation of the Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him); this explanation is the hadith and the Sunnah. Take, for example, a pillar of Islam:
Islam is based on (the following) five (principles): 1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). 2. To offer the (compulsory congregational)
Sahih al-Bukhari 8
. Our Lord says in more than one verse
And establish the prayer.
, then follows it with His saying:
And give the zakah.
. So how do we pray and how do we purify our wealth? That is what our Prophet (peace be upon him) took charge of explaining.
If it were said to these Quranists, "Name for us, or rather, execute for us this first command:
And establish the prayer.
, pray based on the Qur'an alone," he would not be able to do so except by coming up with a dhikr from his own mind. This is what we experienced and heard with our own ears when we met with some of them in Aleppo, in Syria. We said to him, "Execute this verse now in front of us." So he stood up, and instead of reciting:
I have turned my face
or
Glory be to You, O Allah
or
O Allah, purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from filth
Sunan Abi Dawud 781Sahih (Al-Albani)
, or any of the many opening supplications, which number more than ten as I had compiled in the book "The Description of the Prophet's Prayer," he did not say any of that at all. Then he did not recite anything from the Qur'an, not even al-Fatihah, about which he (peace be upon him) said:
There is no Salat for the one who does not recite Fatihatil-Kitab.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 247Sahih (Darussalam)
. So what did he say? He said "Allahu Akbar" and did not raise his hands, then he said: "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar," and he bowed, and prostrated in a general manner, and did not recite the dhikrs that we all know. So what is this prayer? It is a prayer they invented on their own, and by doing so they contradicted the consensus of the Muslims. Therefore, this word, in reality, although it is important and contains a warning against the call of these people, I intended it as an introduction to another source, which is...
