[The ruling on the phrase “So-and-so has a right upon him” and similar expressions]

We often hear in gatherings the word: So-and-so has a right upon him, and you have a right upon yourself, so what is your guidance? The Shaykh: It means a debt.

The questioner: Or similar expressions.

The Shaykh: This is undoubtedly forbidden except for a legitimate religious reason. If we compel a person to pay money or a wedding feast or something similar, this is not permissible except for a legitimate religious reason; For Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not consume one another's wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consentيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لا تَأْكُلُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بَيْنَكُمْ بِالْبَاطِلِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَ تِجَارَةً عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْكُمْ
[Surat al-Nisa: 29] .
