The ruling on saying "By the right of Muhammad upon You" in supplication

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible for one who supplicates to the Lord of the Worlds to say: "By the right of Muhammad upon You"?

Answer:
It is not permissible. One should not say: "By the right of Muhammad," nor "By the status of Muhammad," nor "By the right of the Prophets." One seeks nearness to Allah through His names and attributes, such as saying: "You are the Most Merciful," "You are the Most Compassionate," "You are the Lord of the Worlds," or through righteous deeds. One asks Allah by his faith in Him, his faith in His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his tawhid (the oneness of Allah) of Him, and his sincerity. This is the means of seeking nearness: the beautiful names, the attributes of Allah, and righteous deeds. As for seeking nearness through the status of so-and-so, or the right of so-and-so; this is reprehensible.
