Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

[Surat al-Waqi'ah: 45] This refers to their state in this world. Allah had enriched their bodies and provided them with bodily pleasures to the extent of luxury, but this did not benefit them, may Allah protect us, nor did it save them from the Fire.
