Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (He created man from clay, like pottery)]
(14) He created man from clay like [that of] pottery. (15) And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.خَلَقَ الْأِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ * وَخَلَقَ الْجَانَّ مِنْ مَارِجٍ مِنْ نَارٍ
[al-Rahman:14-15] (He created man) meaning: his species, (from clay) meaning: dry clay that has a sound,Meaning: a sound when you tap it with your fingernail, (like pottery) is baked clay, and this is with regard to the creation of Adam (peace be upon him), for Allah created him from dust, from clay, from clay like pottery, from black mud, all of these are descriptions of the dust, transitioning from being dust, to being clay, to being black mud, to being clay, to being like pottery, until when it was completed, Allah breathed into him of His spirit, and he became a human being.
(And He created the jinn) and they are the jinn (from a flame of fire) al-marij: the mixed substance that occurs in the flame when it rises, becoming mixed with smoke, so it has a color between red and yellow, and this is the flame of fire.
And which was created first? The jinn were created before the humans,Therefore Iblis said to Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِنْ نَارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ طِينٍ
[al-A'raf:12] .

Allah the Exalted said:
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?فَبِأَيِّ آلاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
[al-Rahman:16] meaning: with which of the blessings of Allah do you deny, where Allah (Mighty and Majestic) created man from this substance, and the jinn from this substance, and which is better, the dust or the fire? The dust is better, without doubt, and whoever wants to look into that should refer to the words of Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book Ighathat al-Lahfan min Makayid al-Shaytan.
