Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: “Has it not been time for those who have believed that their hearts should become humble”
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Hadid: 16] Meaning: Has it not become right for these believers that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Allah,Meaning: becoming submissive and yielding with the utmost submission to the remembrance of Allah the Exalted in their hearts, tongues, and limbs.
[Al-Hadid 57:16] Meaning: The Noble Qur'an, which is part of the remembrance of Allah, but He mentioned it specifically due to its importance.
[Al-Hadid: 16] “Those who were given the Scripture before them” are the Jews and the Christians. [Al-Hadid 57:16] Meaning: Time has passed for them and they have forgotten a share of what they were reminded of, refuge with Allah, [Al-Hadid 57:16] and some of them are upright.
In this Noble verse, Allah Blessed and Exalted is He clarifies that it has become right for the believers that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Allah and at the Book of Allah, and that they should not be like those who were given the Scripture before them, for time has passed for them and their hearts have become hard; due to their distance from the time of the messengerships. In this is an indication that the first of the Ummah is better than the last, and more humble in hearts; due to their proximity to the era of the message. And the hadith is authentic regarding this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and he said: “The best of people are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them”.
And in this is a complete condemnation of the Jews and the Christians; because their hearts became hard when time passed for them, and in it is the complete justice in the ruling of Allah Mighty and Majestic,Where he said: [Al-Hadid: 16], and He did not generalize. And this is what is obligatory upon one who speaks about his people: to clarify the reality. Because some people, when they see deviation in some of their people, generalize the ruling to all of them, whereas justice is obligatory. If the majority are the open sinners, he says: If most of them are open sinners, he says “most,” and if many of them are open sinners but not the majority, he says “many,” according to what the situation requires. Because it is obligatory for a person to speak with justice, even if it is against himself, or his parents, or his closest relatives.
Allah the Exalted said:
Has the time not come for those who have believed that their hearts should become humbly submissive at the remembrance of Allah and what has come down of the truth
أَلَمْ يَأْنِ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ تَخْشَعَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّwhat has come down of the truth
وَمَا نَزَلَ مِنَ الْحَقِّAnd let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and a long period passed over them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient.
