The cases in which lying is permissible
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Regarding the cases mentioned in the hadith of Umm Kulthum and the hadith of Asma bint Yazid in which lying is permissible, is the intended meaning of "lying" actual lying, or is it euphemism and obfuscation? And if it is actual lying, can it be extended by analogy to the interest of averting harm?
Lying in three cases, the first: War.
Second: A man speaking with his wife, and vice versa.
Third: For reconciliation between two disputing parties.
Some scholars say: This is explicit lying; because obfuscation is permissible in this case and others.
And among them are those who say: The intended meaning is obfuscation, as Ibrahim said: He excused himself by saying he lied three lies, and they were all obfuscation,And the precaution is: He does not say anything but obfuscation,Even in war, he does not say: But obfuscation,And therefore it is said: Amr ibn Wad intended to challenge Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) to single combat,And single combat: When the two lines met, they requested single combat, a man from you to come out for a man from us; because if one of them was defeated, humiliation would befall his companions. When Amr ibn Wad came out to challenge Ali ibn Abi Talib, and Ali ibn Abi Talib was known for his intelligence (may Allah be pleased with him), he called out to him,And he said: "I did not come out to challenge two men." What happened? Amr ibn Wad turned around, thinking he had someone with him, thinking someone had caught up with him. When he turned around, Ali ibn Abi Talib struck him on the neck and dispatched him. This is good obfuscation, and in war.
Likewise, reconciliation between people, if you see two people in dispute and you reconcile between them, you say: "By Allah, he does not mention you except with good," and the like, while intending something else.
As for a man speaking with his wife, beware of lying to her, do not lie to her,Do not say: "By Allah, I bought this cloth for a thousand riyals, and it is worth twenty riyals," and you ask about its value in the market and it is worth ten riyals, what will happen? It will be a problem, the opposite will occur, so do not lie to her, beware of this,There is no harm in saying: "I love you and you are precious to me," and the like, and she is the same, and also do not tell her this, if you told her this, she would take it at face value and then every day she would lie to you,So the apparent view, and Allah knows best: That the intended meaning is obfuscation, and that explicit lying is not permissible except in cases of extreme necessity.
And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Glory be to You, O our Lord, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no deity but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
