The circumstances in which lying is permissible
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He asks when lying is permissible?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) granted a dispensation for lying in three circumstances: in war, against the enemy, in a manner that does not involve treachery; a lie that does not involve treachery.
The second is: in reconciling people. You reconcile between two tribes, or between two groups, and you lie to this one and that one; a lie that does not harm anyone, for their benefit, that does not harm anyone from the people, then there is no harm.
And the third is: in a man’s speech to his wife and a woman’s speech to her husband, as it is established in the authentic narrations from Umm Kulthum bint 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt (may Allah be pleased with her) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 385 Only in these three.
So if he intends to reconcile between two individuals, or two groups, or two tribes, and lies, he says to this one: "The second tribe is praying for you, praising you, and loves reconciliation with you." Then he goes to the other and says the same to her for the purpose of reconciliation; there is no harm, because this does not harm anyone; it benefits them and does not harm them.
And likewise in war, if he intends a military expedition, he feigns another direction. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he intended a military expedition, would feign another direction, telling the people that he was heading south while he was heading north, so that he would attack the enemy by surprise, if the enemy had been informed, called upon, but refused and persisted in disbelief; then there is no harm in deceiving him so that he can attack him by surprise. And likewise, if the enemy is fortified and does not come out, shooting from within the fortresses, and the commander of the army wishes to come out to the enemy so that Allah may judge between them, he orders the army to move and displays that they are retreating, meaning: returning, hoping that the enemy will come out. He says: "We are moving, we are heading to the city, we are moving," while he is not actually moving, but he wants the enemy to hear the news so that he comes out, so that he can attack him and fight him. If he says this, then this lie is permissible; because it is for the benefit of jihad, and it does not involve treachery to the enemy. The enemy fights, but there is a stratagem for the Muslims so that they can attack their enemy and take their right from him. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he raided Banu al-Mustaliq while they were unprepared, and he killed their fighters and took their families captive; because they had been advised, called upon, but did not respond, so he attacked them, peace and blessings be upon him.
And likewise, a woman with her husband and a husband with his wife need this thing. The husband needs it and the wife needs it. He may become angry with her, and she may become angry with him, so they need to lie, each of them. He says to her: "I will buy you such and such, I will do such and such, we will move to a house... , I will do such and such," things that do not harm anyone between them, for their benefit, there is no harm. Or she says to him: "I will obey, I will never disobey you again," and she is lying, "I will do this, I will make such and such food, I will do such and such," something between them that does not harm anyone from the people; then there is no harm in that for the sake of reconciliation, uniting words, and removing hostility. Yes.
