Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (A group from the former ones)
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Waqi'ah: 13-14] (A group from the former ones) It was said: The intended meaning is the previous nations (and a few from the latter ones) meaning: the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and according to this opinion, the smallness of this Ummah is considered relative to all the previous nations,And the meaning is not: in that those who enter Paradise from the previous nations, considering every Prophet, are more than those who enter Paradise from this Ummah.
And it was said the intended meaning of the former ones is: The first of this Ummah,Meaning: a group from this Ummah and a few from its end, and this opinion is the correct one, indeed it is the established one; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: (I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise) meaning: half of them,And in another hadith: (Indeed, the people of Paradise are one hundred and twenty ranks, of which eighty are from this Ummah) and according to this, it is not correct for us to say: a few from this Ummah and many from the previous nations,Rather, we say: (A group) meaning: many from this Ummah from its beginning, (and a few) from its end, A GROUP FROM THE FORMER ONES * AND A FEW FROM THE LATTER ONES.
Allah the Exalted said:
(13) A [large] company of the former peoples (14) And a few of the later peoples,
ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ * وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَAnd it was said the intended meaning of the former ones is: The first of this Ummah,Meaning: a group from this Ummah and a few from its end, and this opinion is the correct one, indeed it is the established one; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: (I hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise) meaning: half of them,And in another hadith: (Indeed, the people of Paradise are one hundred and twenty ranks, of which eighty are from this Ummah) and according to this, it is not correct for us to say: a few from this Ummah and many from the previous nations,Rather, we say: (A group) meaning: many from this Ummah from its beginning, (and a few) from its end, A GROUP FROM THE FORMER ONES * AND A FEW FROM THE LATTER ONES.
