Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (Upon thrones adorned with brocade)
Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Waqi'ah: 15-16] (Thrones) is the plural of throne: it is what a person makes for sitting and sleeping. (Adorned with brocade) the scholars said: woven from gold. (Reclining upon them) meaning: leaning on their hands and their backs, so they are at ease in their hands and their backs. (Facing one another) meaning: some of them facing others. This indicates the spaciousness of the place; because if the place were narrow, it would not be possible for people to be facing one another. Why? It would not accommodate them; they would have to be in a row behind a row. But if the place is spacious and circular thrones are placed for them, they can face one another even if they are many. This verse indicates that the places are spacious, and that is the case. For this reason, the lowest of the people of Paradise in rank is one who looks at his kingdom for two thousand years; he sees its farthest point as he sees its nearest. There is no god but Allah, how amazing! But it is not amazing; because Allah is capable of all things. And Paradise is as wide as the heavens and the earth. Who can encompass a single heaven, when it is as wide as the seven heavens, and the seven heavens are one above the other? And the higher something is, the wider the circle. So who can encompass this except Allah (Mighty and Majestic)? Its width is as the width of the heavens and the earth.
So they are facing one another; because their places are spacious, and because they have such perfect good manners that it is not possible for one of them to turn his back on another. They are all well-mannered, and all their hearts are pure.Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Hijr: 47] For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade turning one's back on another. Turning one's back includes turning one's back in the heart, such that each person is facing a different direction, and turning one's back physically. Except in cases of need and dire necessity, which is a different matter. Otherwise, whenever it is possible to face one another, that is better. If someone were speaking to you while his back was turned to you, would your listening to him and your love for him be the same as if he were speaking to you while facing you? No, and this is an observed and known fact.

(15) On thrones woven [with ornament], (16) Reclining on them, facing each other.
عَلَى سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍ * مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَSo they are facing one another; because their places are spacious, and because they have such perfect good manners that it is not possible for one of them to turn his back on another.
