The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Upon couches facing each other. They are served with cups of pure wine.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this noble verse is the spaciousness of the dwellings of the people of Paradise, because they are facing each other on the couches, for facing one another leads to the spaciousness of the place, especially given their large numbers.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is also the perfection of the manners of the people of Paradise, as they face one another in such a way that they do not be rude to each other, but rather everyone faces the others. This is undoubtedly a sign of perfect manners. And manners, in reality, are good for the people of Paradise just as they are good for the people of this world. Allah the Exalted said:
And indeed, you are upon a great character وإنك لعلى خلق عظيم
And there is no doubt that if a person is well-mannered, he is beloved to people. On the other hand, rudeness and indifference toward people is a despicable character trait.
Therefore, we look at matters we practice, first and foremost the matter of the greeting of peace. We find that many people, although they are eager for worship, do not care about the greeting of peace, neither initiating it nor returning it. This is contrary to the state of a believer with his brother. It is the right of a Muslim over his brother when he meets him to greet him with peace and to return the greeting with a genuine greeting accompanied by a smile. As for greeting someone with the tip of one’s nose, where one would not know he is greeting them without the sound of whistling, that is not a greeting. Worse than that is when a person greets his brother with a clear, audible voice, and then the brother returns it with a voice that cannot be heard, or returns it with his nose or his hand. This is undoubtedly forbidden for him, because Allah says:
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it وإذا حييتم بتحية فحيوا بأحسن منها أو ردوها
[An-Nisa 4:86]
So it is known that “Peace be upon you” and “And upon you be peace” is not better, nor is it equal. Therefore, it must be either equal to it, which is the minimum of the obligation, or better than it, which is the most perfect.
Similarly, we find that some people turn their backs on their brothers and do not care about them, and this is a mistake. This is not permissible, and I see that sometimes when you finish the prayer, one of the people moves forward without feeling that there are people like him behind him. Why do you move ahead of them? This is what causes differences in hearts. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the rows in prayer:
Do not be irregular لا تختلفوا فتختلف قلوبكم
Sunan Abi Dawud 664
So he made differences, moving forward, and moving backward a cause for differences in hearts. If you were next to this man, you would feel that this man has humiliated you by moving ahead of you and showing you his back. Some people make excuses that they are cramped and want to rest their legs, so they move forward to sit. We say, if you say this, then either you move forward a long distance, or you move backward. He says, “I cannot move backward because there is a row behind me finishing the prayer.” We say, then stand up and move forward a long distance so that you do not turn your back on the people. As for turning your back on the servants of Allah after they have finished the prayer and leaving them behind your back, this is undoubtedly bad manners, and the person next to you will feel that you have humiliated him.
Also, we have the issue where the young among us do not respect the elderly. Two people meet at the door of the mosque or the door of the house, and the young person moves forward, perhaps in haste, to enter before the elderly person. This is not good. Respecting the elderly is among the good traits and the characteristics of the believer. So for a person not to care or be concerned about others is undoubtedly contrary to good manners. The people of Paradise will be on couches facing each other, making them in a circle so that they face one another. Good.
Among the benefits of the verses is also the comfort of the people of Paradise, as they are at leisure on the couches, talking to one another and finding comfort in one another in a state of facing each other. Then...
Among the benefits of this noble verse is also that while they are sitting on the couches, the servants go around them with various types of delights and drinks. Among them is that they are served with cups of pure wine, a cup of clear wine free from impurities. And this cup is in goblets and pitchers. And these cups also—I said the cup is in goblets and pitchers, that is a mistake; pitchers are not goblets—but this cup is measured according to what the drinker needs, not so large that it burdens him, nor so small that it diminishes its pleasure, as Allah the Exalted said: وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِآنِيَةٍ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا 15 قَوَارِيرَ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا 16 And they are served with vessels of silver and goblets that were glass, glass of silver, which they measured with measure. And among the benefits of the noble verse is the purity of this drink with which they are served, due to His saying:
White بيضاء
This is where it ends.
