The Shaykh’s resumption of the answer to the question: Is it permissible to remove evil with the hand?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : After drawing attention to that word and clarifying the intended meaning, I return to answering the question: Do they have the right to change evil with their hands? The truth is that a question like this has no justification.
The student: Peace be upon you.
The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Welcome. There is no justification for it, after every Muslim knows the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 49a ; so changing evil with the hand is a matter explicitly stated in the texts, not the independent legal reasoning of some scholars. Therefore, the question “Is it permissible to change evil with the hand?” is not acceptable when asked in such a general way. However, the question is often general, and the details lie in the heart of the questioner who generalized the question and did not clarify it. So it is as if our brothers there are saying: Is it permissible for people like us, who live in the known conditions we have, to change evil with the hand? The answer is: whether by hand or by tongue, because both changing evil by hand or by tongue are related to the society in which a person lives, unlike changing it in the heart, which none knows but Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And no harm whatsoever results from changing evil in the heart. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the last rank of denouncing evil to be denouncing it in the heart. And if this denunciation in the heart does not occur, he (peace be upon him) said: ; so if the question is about changing evil with the hand and what may be feared of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) that may occur, this also leads us to changing evil with the tongue, because even with the tongue, some evil may occur. So we must answer regarding both denunciations, whether the denunciation is by hand or by tongue. Would a Muslim ask, would a Muslim wonder, is it permissible to denounce evil with the tongue? If we said it is not permissible, could it be said that it is permissible to denounce evil with the hand? Since it is explicitly stated in the hadith, it is even more so that it cannot be said that it is permissible to denounce evil with the tongue. But, again, the observation returns to that observation, which is that it seems our brothers want to say: Is it permissible to change evil with the hand? And I add: and with the tongue, if harm results from it. This is how the question should be asked by any Muslim, no matter how shallow his knowledge: Does he ask, is it permissible to denounce evil with the hand or with the tongue? If there is no harm, this does not cross a Muslim’s mind. Rather, it means: If harm results from denouncing evil with the hand or with the tongue, is it permissible? The answer is: it may be.
The student: Peace be upon you.
The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Welcome. There is no justification for it, after every Muslim knows the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.
مَن رأى منكم منكرًا فليغيِّره بيده ، فإن لم يستطع فبلسانه ، فإن لم يستطع فبقلبه ؛ وذلك أضعف الإيمانThere is not a speck of faith behind that.
فليس وراء ذلك ذرَّة من إيمان
