The comprehensive and sufficient answer, if Allah wills: It is not permissible to dye white hair black;Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Keep away from black) and this is in Sahih Muslim,And the warning regarding that came in the Sunan: (That in the last of time there will be people who dye their hair black like the black of bird wings, who will not enter Paradise, or he said: they will not smell its scent) and this implies that it is one of the major sins.
As for katam, katam is mixed with henna so that the color becomes brown, between black and yellow, and it is not katam alone; because katam alone is black in color, but katam mixed with henna is mixed and dyed with it.
