What is the ruling on one who dyes his hair?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I heard from some of them that dyeing hair is forbidden, and if one uses...

The Shaykh : That?

The questioner : That dyeing hair is forbidden, and I have used it twice. Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : As for dyeing hair that has turned white with gray to black, it is forbidden.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to avoid it, saying:
Change this gray hair and keep it away from black. غيّروا هذا الشيب وجنّبوه السواد
Reported by Muslim. And there is a warning in the Sunan regarding this, stating:
It was narrated that Tamim Dari said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘At the end of time there will be people who will cut off camels’ humps and sheep’s tails. But what is cut from a living animal is dead.’” يكون في ءاخر الزمان قوم يخضبون لحاهم بالسواد
Sunan Ibn Majah 3217Da’if (Darussalam)
I think it is "they will not smell the scent of Paradise". In any case, dyeing gray hair black is forbidden. As for dyeing it with a color other than black, such as dyeing it with a dark color between red and black, or with a yellow color, then there is no harm in that; rather, it is commanded.
Likewise, the other dyes that some women use, unless the dye is something specific to the women of the disbelievers. If it is something specific to the women of the disbelievers, then it is imitating them. And a Muslim woman imitating a disbeliever woman is forbidden, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who copies any people is one of them.من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
This hadith indicates prohibition. Indeed, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The least state of this hadith is prohibition, even though its apparent meaning implies the disbelief of the one who imitates them".

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This listener is Fawwaz from Jeddah, he says.
