The questioner : The questioner asks: What is the correctness of this phrase where a person says to another, "Make your connection with the Messenger," and is it correct to say, "Make your connection with Allah"?
The Shaykh : It is known that when a person advises his brother, he says, "Make a connection between you and Allah," meaning that you should persist in obeying Allah, especially in prayer, because prayer is a connection between the servant and his Lord. There is no harm in saying, "Make a connection between you and the Messenger" in terms of following his Sunnah (peace and blessings be upon him), but not in terms of calling upon him for aid or supplicating to him. For supplicating to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), and calling upon him for aid is major shirk. He (peace and blessings be upon him) does not possess the power to benefit or harm himself. Allah the Exalted said to him:[Al-An'am 6:50] And Allah said to him: [Al-Jinn 72:21-22] So whoever calls upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for aid is a mushrik (one who associates partners with Allah) who commits major shirk that takes him out of the religion. Likewise, whoever supplicates to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) by saying, "O Messenger of Allah, help me," or "O Messenger of Allah, provide me with wealth," or "O Messenger of Allah, grant me a child," or the like of that, this is major shirk that takes one out of the religion. It is obligatory for the one who has done such a thing to repent to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and to direct his supplication and his calling for aid to Allah the Glorious and Exalted. For the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not provide aid; he is not able to intercede for the creation except by the permission of Allah. So how can he provide aid to the creation without Allah the Mighty and Majestic? So what I say is: Make a connection between you and Allah by worshipping Him, and make a connection between you and the Messenger by following him. This is the truth. But if by saying "Make a connection between you and the Messenger" he means making him his refuge in times of hardship and the one he calls upon in times of distress, then this is forbidden (haram), rather it is major shirk that takes one out of the religion.
