The Answer to the Objection of the Jahmiyyah: That Not Everything Sent Down from Allah Is Uncreated, Like the Cattle and Iron.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :
and We send down from the sky pure water
[Al-Furqan 25:48]
and He produced for you from the grazing livestock eight mates
[Az-Zumar 39:6]
And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might
[Al-Hadid 57:25]
Iron, cattle, and water are all created, so it does not follow that something sent down from Allah must be uncreated. So what is the answer to this objection raised by the Jahmiyyah and the Mu'tazilah against the people of the Sunnah? The answer is to say: What is sent down is of two types: a type that subsists in itself, and a type that does not subsist except in something else. That which subsists in itself is created. The water sent down from the sky is a tangible substance we observe, subsisting in itself. And the cattle are eight pairs, subsisting in themselves. No, no. What are the eight pairs of cattle? Who can explain them to me, citing a verse from the Book of Allah?

The questioner :
eight mates - of the sheep, two and of the goats, two. Say, "Is it the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you should be truthful." (144) And of the camels, two and of the cattle, two
[Al-An'am 6:143-144]
.

The Shaykh : Well done. Eight pairs: two from sheep, two from goats, two from camels, and two from cows. And what does "two" mean? A male and a female. Good, may Allah bless you. And We sent down iron, in which is severe might. Is iron a substance that subsists in itself? No, no. It is a substance that subsists in itself. But is the Qur'an a substance that subsists in itself, or is it speech? The speech of the Qur'an is speech, and speech does not subsist except in a speaker; it does not subsist except in a speaker. If it does not subsist except in a speaker, it follows that speech is an attribute of the speaker. And the attributes of the Creator are uncreated, just as the attributes of the created are created. The hearing, sight, power, and strength of a human being are all created, but the hearing, sight, strength, and speech of Allah are uncreated. Is that clear, everyone? And with this, the objection of these Jahmiyyah and Mu'tazilah is refuted, and it becomes clear that the Qur'an is the speech of Allah, that it is one of His attributes, and that it is uncreated.
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:80]
This is what I want to speak about regarding what we heard from the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), which our imams recited and we listened to.
