Evidence for wiping over the leather socks.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So we say: Wiping over the leather socks or over the socks, which are the *shurab*, is established by the Qur'an and by the mass-transmitted Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and by the consensus of the people of the Sunnah; no two have differed on this.
As for the Qur'an, it is in the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):[Al-Ma'idah 5:6] How do you read it, brother? How do you read it from the mushaf that is currently available? Rest, may Allah bless you. The well-known reading before us is [Al-Ma'idah 5:6] "and your feet" with the accusative case, coordinated with "your faces," so the feet are washed. But there is a correct sevenfold reading that is permissible for a person to read with, established from the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him): [Al-Ma'idah 5:6] We say: If the Sunnah had not clarified this, we would have said yes, that the verse allows a person to wipe his feet at times and wash them at times. But the Sunnah clarified when the washing occurs and when the wiping occurs. The washing occurs when the feet are uncovered; one cannot limit oneself to wiping as long as the feet are uncovered. The evidence for this is
The Companions were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and the time for the 'Asr prayer overtook them, so they were wiping over their feet, and perhaps they would leave some of it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called out with his loudest voice: "Woe to the heels from the Fire." This is evidence that it is obligatory to cover the entire foot with washing. And it is established from him, with an establishment like the sun in the fourth hour of the day, wiping over the leather socks when the feet were covered. Based on this, we apply the two readings according to the differing state of the foot: if it is uncovered, what is obligatory? Washing. And if it is covered by socks or leather socks, what is obligatory is wiping. This is the aspect of indication from the Book of the Mighty Allah. As for the Sunnah, it was mass-transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding wiping over the leather socks. Imam Ahmad said: "There is nothing in my heart regarding wiping; there are forty hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions on this." And he spoke the truth (may Allah have mercy on him); there is nothing in our hearts regarding wiping; we believe that it is the truth.
As for the Qur'an, it is in the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles
