The ruling on the fasting of one who is harmed by fasting.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What do you say about a sick man who is harmed by fasting?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : But is fasting permissible for him?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Fasting is not permissible for him, and he is obligated to make up the missed days. Do you agree with this? Good, you have done well. Why is fasting not permissible for him? Because he is harmed by it. Know that a principle of the Shari'ah is that it is not permissible for a person to consume anything that harms his body, because the Shari'ah came to protect bodies. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to consume anything that harms his body, absolutely, even if he consents and says, "I am willing to accept the harm." We say, "The matter is not up to you. You are a created being, and your Lord is Allah (Mighty and Majestic), who said:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً
[An-Nisa 4:29]
The prohibition against killing the self does not mean that a man takes a knife and slaughters himself. No. It certainly includes that, but it also includes every harm that befalls a person, for a person is prohibited from it. The evidence for this is that 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) was in a military expedition. Do you know what a military expedition is? A group that fights, but it is not an army. One night he had major ritual impurity. When a person has major ritual impurity, what is obligatory for him? To take a full ritual bath. But the weather was cold, and he feared for his life if he took a bath. So he performed dry ablution with clean earth and led his companions in prayer. When they came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to him: أصليت بأصحابك وأنت جنب ؟ قال : يا رسول الله. ذكرت قول الله تعالى : وَلا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِيماً فتيممت، فضحك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى بدت نواجذه أو أنيابه Did you lead your companions in prayer while you were in a state of major ritual impurity? He said: O Messenger of Allah, I remembered the saying of Allah the Exalted: And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah has been to you Merciful. So I performed dry ablution with clean earth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed until his molar teeth or his canines were visible. Is this an affirmation or a denial? It is an affirmation. For this reason, it came in the hadith from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
It was narrated from 'Ubadah bin Samit that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ruled: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” لا ضرر ولا ضرار
Sunan Ibn Majah 2340Da'if (Darussalam)
If fasting harms the sick person, then it is not permissible for him to fast, even if he says, "I am forcing myself to fast. I am not sitting among the servants of Allah." We say, "Sit down. The One who obligated you to fast when you were healthy has obligated you to break your fast when you are in harm." And we end here because the time has run out. Yes, we stop here and take whatever questions are possible, and we ask Allah to guide us all to the truth, and to make us among those who fast Ramadan and stand in night prayer with faith and seeking reward. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
