The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : My father has been ill for several years with liver cirrhosis, and when the disease occurred, and when the disease reached its final stages, specifically before the Fajr prayer, he asked me about the arrival of the prayer time. After the time had entered, I informed him, so he performed tayammum and prayed. I do not know how many rak'ahs he prayed. Then he fell into a coma until Allah took his soul after the 'Asr prayer, where he did not pray Zuhr or 'Asr for the reason mentioned. Please inform me, may Allah reward you with good: Regarding the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers, do we make them up?

The Shaykh : If a patient is unconscious and loses consciousness, then there is no prayer required of him, whether he dies or Allah heals him. So if it is decreed that the patient is unconscious for a day or two, or a month or two, and then he regains consciousness, he owes no make-up prayer. It is not possible to analogize unconsciousness to sleep, because the sleeper can, what? He can wake up if he is woken. But the unconscious person cannot. He is in a state between madness and sleep, and the original state is the purity of the conscience. Therefore, one who is unconscious due to illness or an accident does not make up the prayers, whether few or many. However, if he is unconscious due to anesthesia that he used by his own choice, but he did not recover from the anesthesia until after two or three days, then he must repeat the prayer, because this happened by his own choice.
