The Shaykh : And indeed, our Imam and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us a beneficial rule. If you, O human being, were to find it in a book, you would follow it and say, "How clever the author of this book is!" What did he give us? When he turned toward al-Safa after circumambulating the House and approached al-Safa, he recited: “Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” And he said: “I begin with what Allah began with.” Look, glory to Allah, I begin with what Allah began with. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed to a rule, which is to begin here with what Allah began with. Here in dry ablution, with what did Allah begin? With the face. He said:
and wipe over your faces and hands with it فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
So if the one performing dry ablution began with his hands and then his face, would he be complying with the command of Allah based on the rule established by the Messenger (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him)? He would not. But the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them), especially the jurists among them who are people of analogical reasoning, said: We must base the purity of dry ablution on the purity of water. So whatever requires order in the purity of water requires order in the purity of dry ablution. Help me, what requires order in the purity of water? Please, stand up. No, no, what requires order? I am not asking you about the order! What requires order in the purity of water? Wudu, my brothers. Rest. Wudu, what is wudu? You wash the face first, then the hands, then the head, then the feet. But does the full ritual bath have an order or not? It has no order. Wash whatever part of you you want before the other, it does no harm. The scholars who are people of analogical reasoning said: We analogize the purity of dry ablution to the purity of water. So dry ablution for major ritual impurity, if one neglects the order in it, it does no harm. And dry ablution for wudu, the order is necessary in it. But there is no doubt that the most cautious thing for a person, whether in the purity for major ritual impurity or in the purity for wudu, is to arrange it, beginning with the face first, then with what? Then with the hands second. And regarding the hands, does one wipe the hands from the fingertips to the elbows? No. Because when Allah intended the elbows, when He intended the elbows to be the limit, He specified it and said in wudu:
wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows فَاغْسِلُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَأَيْدِيَكُمْ إِلَى الْمَرَافِقِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
In dry ablution, He did not say: to the elbows. So dry ablution is to the wrists only, without addition. If a person wanted to add and wipe his forearm with dry ablution, we would say: This is a religious innovation. And even if some scholars said it, but from every person's speech something is taken and something is left, except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
