The Shaykh : How could he know?
Where were you? He said: I was in a state of major ritual impurity, so I disliked to sit with you while I was not in a state of ritual purity. He said: Glory be to Allah! The believer does not become ritually impure. أين كنت ؟ قال : كنت جنباً فكرهت أن أجالسك وأنا على غير طهارة، فقال : سبحان الله إن المؤمن لا ينجس
He would sometimes enter his house without knowing what was in it. One day he came in and asked for food. They brought him some food, or they made an excuse to him—I forgot which—it was when he said to them:
Did I not see the pot on the fire? ألم أر البرمة على النار؟
And he did not know what was in it. They said: Yes, but this is meat that was given in charity to Barirah. Who is Barirah? She was a slave woman that Aisha bought and freed, and she remained with Aisha to serve her. They said: This is meat that was given in charity to her. Did he know? He did not know. He saw the pot on the fire, but he did not know what was in it. So he said, peace and blessings be upon him:
It is an object of charity for Barira, and it is a present for us. هو عليها صدقة ولنا هدية
Sahih al-Bukhari 5097
And they said it was meat given in charity to her because it is among the special characteristics of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, that he does not eat charity, and a fortiori, he does not eat zakah. As for the people of the Prophet’s household, they do not eat zakah, but they do eat charity. Voluntary charity is lawful for the people of the household, but zakah is forbidden for them.
I ask Allah for sincerity in our deeds and for following the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, for both of us. I ask Him, the Exalted, to gather us in his group, to give us to drink from his pool, to include us in his intercession, and to unite us with him in the Gardens of Delight.
