Discussion of Women Visiting Graves
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We discussed the visiting of graves mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him), and we clarified that it has a great benefit: it reminds a person of death or the Hereafter. It should be known that visiting graves is not permissible for women, so it is not permissible for a woman to visit the cemetery, . This is because a woman is weak and cannot bear it, so she might wail, cry, and beat her chest. Also, cemeteries are usually empty of people, so it is feared that if a woman goes out to them, the foolish and lowly among people might follow her, leading to what is to be avoided and fitnah (trial). For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the women who visit graves.
However, if a woman passes by the cemetery without going out with the intention of visiting, there is no harm in her stopping, sending salam, and making du'a (supplication) just as a man does, because there is a difference between having the intention and not having it. It should also be known that the people of the graves, no matter how much good deeds and piety they have attained, do not possess the ability to benefit or harm themselves, nor do they possess the ability to benefit or harm others. For this reason, they are supplicated for, but they do not supplicate. They are supplicated for, as previously mentioned, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) supplicated for them, but they do not supplicate because they are of no benefit. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:[Al-Ahqaf 46:5-6], and the Exalted said: [Fatir 35:13-14].
Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) cursed the women who visit graves and those who build mosques and hang lamps on them
