The questioner : Is it true that the righteous and the awliya (close friends of Allah) are revealed the secrets of the Qur'an that are not revealed to others and that are not found in the books of exegesis?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. There is no one specifically designated for understanding the Qur'an; rather, understanding the Qur'an is for everyone. However, whoever has more knowledge of Allah and is more mindful of Him is closer to understanding the Qur'an, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:[Muhammad 47:17] When it was said to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) leave you with a covenant regarding the caliphate?" He said: "No, by He who splits the seed and releases the fetus, except for an understanding that Allah the Exalted grants to whomever He wills of His servants in the Book of Allah, and what is in this sheet." They asked: "What is in this sheet?" He said: "Intellect, the release of the captive, and that a Muslim not be killed for a disbeliever." However, there are people who claim to be awliya (close friends of Allah) and that hidden meanings in the Qur'an are opened to them that no one else knows. They treat the words of the Qur'an as symbols and pointers to meanings that cannot be understood from the words of the Qur'an according to the Arabic language or according to the reality of the Shari'ah. These are the ones who call themselves the people of knowledge of the hidden. Their words are not accepted in interpreting the Qur'an because it is a lie against Allah Blessed and Exalted is He, where they interpreted His speech with what it does not indicate in the language in which it was revealed, which is the Arabic language. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said: [Az-Zukhruf 43:3] And Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said in the Noble Qur'an: [Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-195] meaning in eloquent Arabic.
On this occasion, I urge my brothers, especially the students of knowledge, to be diligent in understanding the meanings of the Noble Qur'an, because the Noble Qur'an was revealed for worship through its recitation, for reflecting on its meaning, and for acting upon it. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:[Sad 38:29] Many students of knowledge are diligent in understanding the Sunnah that came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) through research, precision, and reviewing the words of the scholars, but they are negligent in interpreting the Qur'an and understanding it. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), when they read ten verses from the Book of Allah, did not move on from them until they learned them and the knowledge and action contained therein. So learn the Qur'an, the knowledge, and the action all together. I repeat my advice to my brothers, the students of knowledge, to pay attention to understanding the Noble Qur'an and to review the words of the scholars in their exegeses. By scholars, I mean the trustworthy scholars, such as the Tafsir of Ibn Jarir, Ibn Kathir, al-Qurtubi, al-Shawkani, and those similar to them, as well as the Tafsir of our Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'di (may Allah have mercy on him). Although there is some matter in Tafsir al-Qurtubi that is not as it should be, and there are weak athar (reports) in the Tafsir of Ibn Jarir, the discerning one knows how to handle it. Yes.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.
وَالَّذِينَ اهْتَدَوْا زَادَهُمْ هُدًى وَءاتَاهُمْ تَقْواهُمْIndeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand.
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهُ قُرْءانًا عَرَبِيًّا لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ(192) And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. (193) The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (194) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - (195) In a clear Arabic language.
وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنْزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ * نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الأَمِينُ * عَلَى قَلْبِكَ لِتَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُنذِرِينَ * بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِيٍّ مُبِينٍOn this occasion, I urge my brothers, especially the students of knowledge, to be diligent in understanding the meanings of the Noble Qur'an, because the Noble Qur'an was revealed for worship through its recitation, for reflecting on its meaning, and for acting upon it.
