A man who has memorized the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but he does not know the night prayer, and he comes to the mosque near the iqamah, and the effect of his memorization of the Qur'an is not apparent on him, and he does not complete a recitation of the Qur'an.

The questioner : He says: A man who has memorized the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), but he does not know the night prayer, and he comes to the mosque near the iqamah, and the effect of his memorization of the Noble Qur'an is not apparent on him, and he does not complete a recitation of the Qur'an except once in two months. Does he sin by doing so, even though he has memorized it?

The Shaykh : He does not sin by this, because when a person fulfills the obligations of Islam and the pillars of Islam, he does not sin. However, he should, as long as Allah has blessed him with the memorization of the Qur'an, strive to recite the Qur'an, because reciting the Qur'an carries a great reward: one letter is a good deed, and a good deed is multiplied tenfold. So one who counts the letters in the Qur'an should not deprive himself of reading the Qur'an frequently, in order to seek reward from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and in order to retain the Qur'an, because if a person does not review the Qur'an, he will forget it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advised reviewing the Qur'an and said:
for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is the life of Mahammad that it is more liable to escape than camels which are hobbled. فو الذي نفسي بيده لهو أشَدّ تفلتاً من الإبل في عقلها
Sahih Muslim 791
This is part of the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that the Qur'an is forgotten quickly, so that a person strives to review it and recite it frequently, thereby obtaining reward and increasing in reward, and so that this serves as a test and trial from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) of who is eager for the Book of Allah and who is not. I advise my brothers whom Allah has blessed with the memorization of the Qur'an to increase in its recitation, because of the reward and recompense one gains from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in doing so.
I ask Allah to grant us all the recitation of His Book in a true manner of recitation.

The questioner : O Allah, amen.

The Shaykh : With preservation, knowledge, and action. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good. The questioner says:
