The questioner : Is it permissible to fast six days of Shawwal before making up the fasts of Ramadan? If this is not permissible, is it permissible to fast on a Monday in Shawwal with the intention of making up Ramadan, the intention of fasting Shawwal, and the intention of the reward for Monday?

The Shaykh : Fasting six days of Shawwal does not yield its reward unless a person has completed the month of Ramadan. Therefore, one who has missed fasts from Ramadan must not fast the six days of Shawwal until he has made up the fasts of Ramadan. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal من صام رمضان ثم أتبعه بست من شوال
Sunan Ibn Majah 1716Sahih (Darussalam)
He said:
Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it من صام رمضان ثم أتبعه
Sunan Ibn Majah 1716Sahih (Darussalam)
One who has missed fasts from Ramadan has not fasted Ramadan. Accordingly, we say to the one who has missed fasts: fast the make-up fasts first, then fast the six days of Shawwal. If it happens that fasting these six days falls on a Monday or a Thursday, he will receive the reward with his intention for the six days and the reward for Monday or Thursday, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. إنما الأعمال بالنيات، وإنما لكل أمرئ ما نوى
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
