The questioner : My illness requires lifelong treatment, and drinking water continuously is part of the treatment, as the doctors say. I have a great longing to fast the month of Ramadan. What should I do? I want to obtain the great virtue of the month of Ramadan. Please issue a ruling for us. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : If you are in need of treatment constantly and it is not possible for you to leave it, then there is no blame on you if you break your fast in Ramadan. It is obligatory for one who is in your condition to feed one poor person for every day. This is what the scholars mentioned regarding a patient with an illness that is not expected to end; they placed him in the ruling of the old person who is unable to fast. It is obligatory for him to make expiation by feeding one poor person for every day. In this case, he is like one who fasted. You can make use of the month of Ramadan with other righteous deeds, such as charity, reading the Qur'an, dhikr (the remembrance of Allah), prayer, and the like.

The questioner : He also asks.
