The questioner : I have a friend who is very forgetful and always doubts whether he performed his prayer completely or not? And whether he recited the tashahhud or not? And whether he prayed his prayer quietly or aloud? I have advised him many times, and I advised him to build on certainty and complete his prayer. Is that permissible for him, O honorable Shaykh? We ask that you advise him with what is sufficient?
The Shaykh : These doubts, illusions, and whispers that come to a person in his prayer and in his wudu' as well, and they may even extend to all his actions, including his private dealings with his family and children. These illusions, whispers, and doubts may extend to them, causing him to be wavering in all his actions. The only way to repel these whispers and illusions is for a person to increase his recitation of the prescribed adhkar reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And when he feels these whispers, he should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan, even if he is in his prayer. He should not pay attention to them and should turn away from them, so that they do not occupy his mind. It will be difficult for him at first, but if he seeks help from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and resolves and determines not to pay attention to them, they will be removed from him. My advice to this brother and to others who have been afflicted with this affliction is to do what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded, which is to seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan and to turn away from these whispers until they are removed from them, by the permission of Allah.
