The questioner : He says:The questioner : I am afflicted with many intrusive thoughts when I am about to perform an act, a worship, or send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). These intrusive thoughts occur to me that these things lead to the divorce of my wife. What is the ruling on this?

The Shaykh : This is a calamity that befalls many people. They imagine that if they perform an act of worship, it means their wife is divorced. This is from Shaytan, and Shaytan casts into the hearts of the sons of Adam intrusive thoughts that are even greater; he casts upon them intrusive thoughts concerning the Essence of the Lord (Mighty and Majestic) and His attributes. But the cure has been explained to us by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his saying:
Let him seek refuge in Allah and let him stop. فليستعذ بالله ولينته
And there remains for us the issue of some of those whom Allah the Exalted has tested with intrusive thoughts regarding the divorce of their wives. With severe distress in his heart, he says, "So I will divorce her and be at ease," and he actually says, "My wife is divorced," with his tongue. Does this divorce take effect? The question, my brothers, is: does this divorce take effect? No, even if he utters it with his tongue, based on the internal psychological pressure, the divorce does not take effect, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no divorce in a state of being overwhelmed. لا طلاق في إغلاق
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 16:86
Now, there is also another example: a man afflicted with intrusive thoughts regarding ritual purity. Shaytan comes to him and says, "You have become ritually impure," and pressures him, so he says, "So I have become ritually impure," and he goes and passes wind from his rear in order to be certain that he has become ritually impure. Is this the correct way?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : No, but is he ritually impure or not?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : There is no god but Allah! The man urinated, or defecated, or passed wind!
The student: ...

The Shaykh : ... No, he is ritually impure, my brother, he is ritually impure without a doubt, but is this the sound way? No, the sound way is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided us to in his saying:
He should not return (from prayer) unless he hears a sound or perceives a smell (of passing wind). لا ينصرف حتى يسمع صوتاً أو يجد ريحاً
Sahih Muslim 361
And the way is not to go and urinate or pass wind, for example. No, this is not the correct way. The correct way is that you turn away from it and do not leave your prayer and do not exit your mosque until you hear a sound or find wind. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : He gets rid of it by what I mentioned, by saying, "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan," and it ends, and he turns away from it.
