If one is overcome by intrusive thoughts during prayer, should he repeat it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from Libya says: I have a problem: in most of my prayers, I am plagued by some intrusive thoughts, for example: I do not know if I prayed three or four rak'ahs? Did I prostrate or not? Did I bow or not? Consequently, the matter becomes confused for me; should I repeat my prayer? These things worry me greatly. What should I do, O Shaykh?

Answer:
If these intrusive thoughts are established in you, then this is from Shaytan without a doubt. So act according to your opinion and your best effort, and do not obey Shaytan. If the intrusive thoughts are many, act according to your best effort and your opinion, and praise be to Allah, and do not repeat the prayer. If the intrusive thoughts affect you, did you pray two or three? Go with what you think, two or three, contrary to Shaytan. But if it is something that does not occur to you much, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If you are uncertain in the prayer and do not know whether you have prayed three or four rakasإذا شك أحدكم في صلاته فلم يدر كم صلى أثلاثًا أم أربعًا فليطرح الشك وليبن على ما استيقن
Muwatta Malik 3:66
.
If you doubt whether you prayed two or three, make it two, then complete your prayer and prostrate for forgetfulness. And if you doubt between three or four, meaning: the Dhuhr, Asr, or Isha, make it three, and complete it and prostrate for forgetfulness. And so it is in the voluntary prayer; if you doubt whether you prayed one or two, make it one, then perform the second, then prostrate for forgetfulness. And do not obey Shaytan if the intrusive thoughts are few.
But if the intrusive thoughts prevail and the intrusive thoughts become many, act according to your opinion, and discard what the enemy says. If the intrusive thoughts are many, act according to your opinion. If the intrusive thoughts are many, are they two or three? Make it according to what you think. And so it is in the recitation, and so it is in the voluntary prayer, and so it is in the tawaf... and the like of that. Yes.
