Reciting the Qur'an at the grave after the burial of the deceased, and reciting the Qur'an for the deceased in the homes, which we call a mercy for the dead, and giving the reciters money

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The listener is also asking, O honorable Shaykh, and he says: regarding reciting the Qur'an at the grave after the burial of the deceased, and reciting the Qur'an for the deceased in the homes, and we call it: a mercy for the dead, and we give the reciters money; what is the ruling of the Shari'ah also regarding this practice of ours?

The Shaykh : The stronger of the opinions of the scholars is that reciting at the grave after its burial is a religious innovation (bid'ah), because it was not practiced in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command it, nor did he himself do it. Rather, the utmost that has been reported in this regard is that when the deceased is buried, one stands over him and says:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم واسألوا له التثبيت فإنه الأن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
If reciting at the grave were good and prescribed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have commanded it or done it, so that the Ummah would learn of it.
Likewise, if people gather in the homes to recite for the soul of the deceased, this also has no basis. The righteous Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them) did not do this. It is obligatory for a person, when struck by a calamity, to be patient and seek reward from Allah, and to say what the patient ones said: "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better." As for gathering at the home of the deceased, reciting the Qur'an, preparing food, and the like, all of it is among the religious innovations (bid'ah) that have no basis from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) or from his Companions. It is obligatory to be cautious of them and to stay away from them.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. A message arrived from a listener who symbolized her name with the letters S, D, M, from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Al-Hafayr, Sa'd Village, she says.
