A woman’s puberty is attained by one of four things: either she reaches fifteen years of age, or her pubic hair grows, or she has a wet dream, or she menstruates. If one of these four things occurs, she has reached puberty, is held accountable, and acts of worship become obligatory upon her, just as they are obligatory upon an adult. So I say to her that it is obligatory for her now, if she has not fasted the month that coincided with her menstruation. I say: It is obligatory for her now to fast it, and let her hasten to do so so that the sin is removed from her.
