The questioner : I ask your Excellency to direct a word to those who believe that holding mourning gatherings is a necessary and important matter for the deceased, knowing that this matter has become a field of competition, where one seeks to bring the best reciter and pay more money. We ask for advice in this regard?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what follows:
The advice I direct to those who have been afflicted with these customs, which contradict the way of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions, is that they should know with certainty that gathering for these sins is among the matters of religious innovation (bid'ah) that were not known in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions. And they should know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 1578Sahih (Darussalam).
They should also know that if these gatherings include wailing and lamentation, then gathering for them is among the major sins, because lamentation is a major sin. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the woman who laments and the one who listens to her, and he said:Sahih Muslim 934, refuge with Allah. And whoever agrees with her in her lamentation and listens to it, he has a share of the sin equal to what she has. Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nisa 4:140], meaning if you sit with them, you are like them. [An-Nisa 4:140] And let these people know that the deceased does not benefit from this in any way. This is because the reciter they bring to this place does not recite except for a wage. And if he does not recite except for a wage, then he has no reward from the reward of the Hereafter, because he sought the worldly life with this deed. And whoever seeks the worldly life with his deed, he has no reward except what he obtained in his worldly life. And what he obtained in his worldly life does not reach the deceased. Allah the Exalted says: [Hud 11:15-16] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 2529.
Therefore, this deed contains nothing but the waste of time, the waste of money, and the acquisition of sins. So my advice to my brothers who have been struck by the calamity of the death of their deceased is that they do what Allah and His Messenger guided them to in His saying:[Al-Baqarah 2:155-156] So he should say: "Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we return," and he should say: "O Allah, reward me in my calamity and replace for me something better than it." For if he says that, Allah will reward him in his calamity and replace for him something better than it. And let him be patient and let him count it as a reward for the bitterness of patience in this calamity, for Allah says: [Al-Anfal 8:46] And He, Glorious is His mention, says: [Az-Zumar 39:10].

every innovation is going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire
They should also know that if these gatherings include wailing and lamentation, then gathering for them is among the major sins, because lamentation is a major sin. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the woman who laments and the one who listens to her, and he said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange.
And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them
Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together -
(15) Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein, and they therein will not be deprived. (16) Those are the ones for whom there is not in the Hereafter but the Fire. And lost is what they did therein, and worthless is what they used to do.
So, whoever migrated for Allah and His Apostle, then his migration will be for Allah and His Apostle, and whoever migrated for worldly benefits or for marrying a woman, then his migration will be for what he migrated for.
Therefore, this deed contains nothing but the waste of time, the waste of money, and the acquisition of sins. So my advice to my brothers who have been struck by the calamity of the death of their deceased is that they do what Allah and His Messenger guided them to in His saying:
