The questioner : When we go to Makkah to perform the obligatory Hajj, for 'Umrah or otherwise, we wear the hijab. Some say that you owe a blood sacrifice. Is this correct, O honorable Shaykh, or not? And is it permissible to uncover the face from the hijab while we are near the Sacred Ka'bah? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : If a woman in the state of ihram passes by men, or if men pass by her, it is obligatory for her to cover her face, just as the women of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did. In this case, she owes no expiation, because this is a commanded matter, and a commanded matter does not become forbidden. It is not required that the covering not touch her face; rather, if the covering touches her face, there is no blame on her. She must cover her face as long as she is in the presence of men. If she enters her tent or her house, she may uncover her face, because it is prescribed for the woman in ihram to uncover her face.
