The questioner : about the correct manner reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the washing of the deceased?

The Shaykh : The prescribed manner for washing the deceased is that a person washes the private parts of the deceased, then proceeds to wash the body, starting with the limbs of ablution. He performs ablution for the deceased, except that he does not put water in his mouth or nose; rather, he wets a cloth and cleans his nose and mouth with it. Then he washes the rest of the body using sidr. Sidr is known; it is ground and placed in water, then beaten by hand with the water until it produces foam. The foam is taken and used to wash the head and beard, and the rest of the body is washed with the residue of the sidr, as this cleans it very well. Camphor is placed in the final wash.
Camphor is a known fragrance. The scholars said: Among its benefits is that it stiffens the body and drives away insects. If the deceased is very dirty, the washing is increased, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the women who were washing his daughter:
Three times, or five or seven, or more than that, if you think that (is necessary). اغسلنها ثلاثاً أو خمساً أو سبعاً أو أكثر من ذلك إن رأيتن ذلك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1889Sahih (Darussalam)
After this, the body is dried and placed in the shroud.
