When I was in the Noble Makkah, I received news that a relative of ours had passed away, so I performed seven circuits of tawaf around the Ka'bah and intended the reward for her. Is that permissible? I hope for guidance on this.

The questioner : When I was in the Noble Makkah, I received news that a relative of ours had passed away, so I performed seven circuits of tawaf around the Ka'bah and intended the reward for her. Is that permissible? I hope for guidance on this?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
Yes, it is permissible for you to perform seven circuits of tawaf and dedicate the reward to any Muslim you wish. This is the well-known position in the school of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him): that any act of devotion a Muslim performs and dedicates the reward of to a dead or living Muslim benefits that person, whether the act is purely physical, such as prayer or tawaf, purely financial, such as charity, or a combination of both, such as the sacrificial animal. However, it should be known that it is better for a person to dedicate righteous deeds to himself and to single out any Muslim he wishes for supplication on their behalf, because this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided us to in his saying:
When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him (for the deceased). إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاثة إلا من صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعوا له
