Is it permissible for a person to intend tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) on behalf of another?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says: Is it permissible for a person to intend tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) on behalf of another?

The Shaykh : There is scholarly disagreement on this matter: some say that a person’s deed does not benefit another except for what the Sunnah has specifically established, because the default ruling is prohibition
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives وأن ليس للإنسان إلا ماسعى
[An-Najm 53:39]
.
And some said: It is permissible.
But I say: I say it is permissible, except that leaving it is better. And what a person should do is make du'a' (supplication) for the deceased, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) guided us to in his saying:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث : صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 949
He did not say “or a righteous son who prays for him, or gives charity, or fasts,” but rather he said “or a righteous son who makes du'a' (supplication) for him.”
