The questioner : We always see that the supplication of qunut is recited in the witr prayer, and this is done in the noble month of Ramadan. Is it valid for us to recite it on ordinary days, or is this supplication specific to the days of Ramadan? Also, during the prayer of al-shaf', Surat al-A'la is recited in the first rak'ah and Surat al-Kafirun in the second rak'ah. Are we required to adhere to this? May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, for providing us with this information?
The Shaykh : We are not required to recite a specific surah in any of the prayers, except for the recitation of Surat al-Fatihah. The prayer is not completed without the recitation of al-Fatihah, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 394c This was reported by the two Shaykhs in their Sahihs from the hadith of 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit. And based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: meaning it is defective. So there is nothing from the Qur'an whose recitation is mandatory in the prayer except al-Fatihah, for the prayer is not valid without it, whether it is the prayer of a ma'mum, the prayer of an imam, or the prayer of one praying alone.
As for the recitation of and and [Al-Ikhlas 112:1] in the witr, if a person performs witr with three rak'ahs, the Sunnah has come regarding this. If he recites them, that is better, and if he recites something else, there is no blame on him.
As for the qunut in the witr, the scholars have differed greatly regarding the qunut in the witr. If he performs the qunut, especially in Ramadan due to the presence of the people and their gathering for the tawammun, that is better. And if he leaves out the qunut at times so that it is not thought to be obligatory, that is better and more correct. And if he leaves out the qunut absolutely, in Ramadan and otherwise, there is no blame on him, because the qunut is not one of the obligatory duties of the prayer.
The Shaykh : We are not required to recite a specific surah in any of the prayers, except for the recitation of Surat al-Fatihah. The prayer is not completed without the recitation of al-Fatihah, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who does not recite Umm al-Qur'an is not credited with having observed prayer.
لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بأم القرآنEvery prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur'an, or he said, Umm al-Kitab, is incomplete, it is incomplete, it is incomplete.
