Is the qunut in witr prescribed in Ramadan and in other times?

The questioner : The qunut in witr...

The Shaykh : The qunut in witr, what comes after it?

The questioner : In Ramadan and in other times?

The Shaykh : The qunut in witr is, without a doubt, a recommended practice (sunnah) established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in more than one authentic hadith. Part of the completeness of this is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) made for it a specific dhikr and a regular recitation, which he taught to his son al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with them both), and this is what is known in the Shafi'i school:
Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta wa 'afini fiman afayta باللهم اهدني فيمن هديت ، وعافني فيمن عافيت
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1745Sahih (Darussalam)
and so on. Then there is a hadith that explicitly states that the qunut in witr was performed by him (peace and blessings be upon him) before the bowing (ruku'), unlike the qunut for calamities in the obligatory prayers, where it is established in the authentic hadiths that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform it after the bowing. This should be noted in order to apply the Sunnah: the qunut in witr is before the bowing, and in the five obligatory prayers for a calamity only, it is after the bowing. However, in addition to what I mentioned earlier about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performing the qunut in witr before the bowing, it is established from some of the Salaf, foremost among them 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), that he used to perform the qunut after the bowing in witr. He used to perform it after the bowing. Because of the Prophetic Sunnah and because of the 'Umaric Sunnah, we do not be strict or deny those who perform the qunut in witr after the bowing, because there is a basis for it and they have a precedent. But we prefer the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and we prioritize it over what is established from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). So you have the choice whether to perform the qunut before the bowing or after the bowing in witr, but the best is before the bowing. You do not have the choice to perform the qunut for a calamity in the five obligatory prayers before the bowing. Here there are two completely opposing schools of jurisprudence: the Hanafi school makes the qunut before the bowing, with no difference between the qunut in witr or in the obligatory prayer. On the contrary, the Shafi'is also reverse it, saying that the qunut is after the bowing in witr and in the obligatory prayer. The correct position, which is established in the Prophetic Sunnah first, and then the 'Umaric Sunnah second, is the distinction that I clarified for you earlier.
