about qunut in witr.

The questioner : The du'a of qunut... is it a bid'ah (religious innovation)?

The Shaykh : We say—may Allah bless you—in answer to your question: Qunut in witr is a sunnah (recommended practice).

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Be patient. One question after another is not proper! Let us finish answering the first question, and then, if you wish, you may ask another question.
Qunut in witr is a sunnah (recommended practice), and it is a sunnah not restricted to any month of the year, not to Ramadan, not to Sha'ban, nor to any other month of the year. Therefore, if a Muslim wishes to pray witr, he should pray it following the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there is no difference in that whether he prays witr in Ramadan or in a month other than Ramadan, in the first half of Ramadan or in the second half. Witr has no specific time in any month of the year. Accordingly, if a worshipper intends to stand for tarawih in Ramadan and wishes to perform qunut, he may do so, whether in the beginning of Ramadan or at the end, because witr is part of the night prayer. In this case, it is recommended and prescribed (mashru') that the imam raise his voice with the du'a of qunut and raise his hands, and those praying behind him do the same, raising their hands and saying "Ameen" to his supplication. Thus, qunut is prescribed throughout the year. However, since qunut is part of the night prayer, and the night prayer in the year is not prescribed in congregation except incidentally, unlike the night prayer of Ramadan which is a sunnah (recommended practice), the congregation for the witr prayer comes here following the entire tarawih prayer. This is the answer to your question regarding the permissibility of qunut in the second half of Ramadan.
And the answer in brief is: Qunut is prescribed absolutely throughout the year, and not only in the second half of Ramadan. As for whether qunut is a confirmed sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah) or not, the answer is: It is not reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was consistent in performing qunut in witr; rather, it is established that he performed it occasionally. Therefore, it is a recommended sunnah (sunnah mustahabbah). Whoever prays witr and performs qunut occasionally has done what is correct, and if he prays witr and omits it occasionally, that is closer to the sunnah (recommended practice). As for being consistent in performing qunut in witr, that is something that has not been reported.

Another questioner : ... ؟

The Shaykh : If he forgets the qunut while he had intended to perform it, the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
For every forgetfulness, there are two prostrations لكل سهو سجدتان
. But if he did not perform qunut in accordance with the detail we mentioned, namely that he performs it occasionally and does not perform it occasionally, then there is no justification for prostration.
