The questioner : What is the ruling on the saliva that comes out of a person while he is sleeping? Does this fluid come from the mouth or from the stomach? And if we rule that it is impure, how can one guard against it?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
This saliva that comes out of a sleeping person while he is sleeping is pure and not impure. The original ruling for what comes out of the children of Adam is purity, except for what evidence indicates to be impure, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 283.
So saliva, sweat, tears from the eye, what comes out of the nose, and the fluid from wounds, all of these are pure, because this is the original ruling. Urine, feces, and everything that comes out of the two passages are impure. This saliva that comes out of a person while he is sleeping falls under the things that are pure, like phlegm, nasal mucus, and the like.
And based on this, it is not obligatory for a person to wash it, nor to wash any clothing or bedding that it touches.

A believer never becomes impure.
