Sometimes my father asks me to buy cigarettes for him. Is there a sin on me for this?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Also, among the questions from listeners, one says: Sometimes my father asks me to buy cigarettes for him. Is there a sin on me for this?

The Shaykh : Smoking is forbidden based on the general evidence from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Indeed, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. ولا تقتلوا أنفسكم إن الله كان بكم رحيما
[An-Nisa 4:29]
And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining] ولا تلقوا بأيديكم إلى التهلكة
[Al-Baqarah 2:195]
And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says:
and eat and drink, but be not excessive وكلوا واشربوا ولا تسرفوا
[Al-A'raf 7:31]
If Allah the Exalted has forbidden extravagance in eating and drinking what is permissible, what then of drinking what is forbidden? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It was narrated from 'Ubadah bin Samit that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ruled: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” لا ضرر ولا ضرار
Sunan Ibn Majah 2340Da'if (Darussalam)
It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade the squandering of wealth. No sane person doubts that spending money on smoking is a squandering of wealth. Accordingly, the Book and the Sunnah each indicate the prohibition of smoking, and reason also indicates this. It has been established by doctors, with no room for doubt, that smoking is harmful to the body. A sane person cannot consume what harms him, let alone a wise and decisive believer. Once the prohibition of smoking is clear, one who facilitates it is facilitating a forbidden act, falling into what Allah forbade in His saying:
but do not cooperate in sin and aggression ولا تعاونوا على الإثم والعدوان
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
If your father orders you to buy cigarettes for him, do not obey him, for there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator. However, do not meet him with violence or harshness. Apologize to him gently and tell him that this is a forbidden thing and that you advise him against smoking because of the harm and sin it contains. Explain to him the causes that necessitate its prohibition, or the evidence that necessitates it. Show him the evidence that necessitates its prohibition, then say to him, for example: "I hope you will excuse me for not bringing it to you, because I see that it is forbidden, and facilitating the forbidden is forbidden." The important thing is to speak to him gently, without violence or harshness, and to repeat the advice to him always and forever, perhaps Allah will guide him through your hand. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
