The questioner : We are concluding this episode with a message from the listener Ibrahim Basioni. He says that he works in a very remote area that is a long distance from the city where the Friday prayer is held. Does he perform the Dhuhr prayer, or is it necessary for him to go to the city to perform the prayer with the congregation?

The Shaykh : If the city is far away, he is not required to go to it, because going is contingent upon hearing the call to prayer
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
. If he is outside the town in a distant place, he is not required to go to the town because he is not being called by this adhan due to his distance. However, if he is close, it is obligatory for him to go to the Friday prayer to pray with the Muslims. If he is not required to go to the Friday prayer, he prays Dhuhr and does not pray two rak'ahs, as some scholars have said. This is a weak opinion with no evidence for it; rather, the evidence indicates the opposite. The Friday prayer is distinct from other prayers; it is preceded by a sermon, or rather two sermons. It is a prayer in which people gather in one place. It is a prayer in which the recitation is pronounced aloud. It is a festival, the weekly festival. For this reason, it is like the festival prayers of 'Id al-Fitr and 'Id al-Adha in that it consists of two rak'ahs with the recitation pronounced aloud, although the two festival prayers differ from it by the additional takbirs.
As for the Dhuhr prayer, it is also an independent, standalone prayer. It is not preceded by two sermons, the recitation is not pronounced aloud in it, and people do not gather in one place for it. Thus, the difference between the two is established. Whoever does not pray the Friday prayer must pray Dhuhr, such as women, for example, or a sick person who prays in his house, or a distant person who is unable to attend the mosque, or one who arrives and finds that the people have already prayed. On this occasion, I would like to clarify: if a person comes to the Friday prayer, does he pray Dhuhr or Friday? We say that if he catches a rak'ah, he completes it as one rak'ah, meaning he prays Friday. If he does not catch a complete rak'ah, he prays Dhuhr. If you arrive and the imam has already risen from the bowing in the second rak'ah, you must pray Dhuhr. If you arrive and the imam is in the second rak'ah before bowing, pray with him for one rak'ah, then complete the prayer with one rak'ah after he concludes the prayer. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh.
