The questioner : When I finish my prayer, I seek Allah's forgiveness thirty-three times, I glorify Allah thirty-three times, I praise Allah thirty-three times, I declare the greatness of Allah thirty-three times, and I say: "There is no god but Allah" thirty-three times. Is there anything wrong with that?

The Shaykh : Yes, there is something to this, because this is contrary to the Sunnah. The Sunnah is that when a person says the closing salam of an obligatory prayer, he seeks Allah's forgiveness three times, saying: "I seek Allah's forgiveness, I seek Allah's forgiveness, I seek Allah's forgiveness. O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor." And he says: "There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things," three times in the Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha prayers. As for the Maghrib and Fajr prayers, he says: "There is no god but Allah" ten times. Then he says: "Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, and Allah is the Greatest" thirty-three times each, making the total ninety-nine. Then he completes the hundred by saying: "There is no god but Allah alone, having no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things." This is one type of dhikr.
Another type is to say: "Glory be to Allah" thirty-three times, "Praise be to Allah" thirty-three times, and "Allah is the Greatest" thirty-four times. This is a second type. Or he says: "Glory be to Allah" ten times, "Praise be to Allah" ten times, and "Allah is the Greatest" ten times. This is a third type. Or he says: "Glory be to Allah, praise be to Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest" twenty-five times. This is a fourth type. Then, when he finishes this, let him glorify Allah as much as he wishes and praise Allah as much as he wishes, not believing that it is a Sunnah, but believing that it is a prescribed dhikr that is not prohibited. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This questioner, Muhammad Abdullah, says.
