The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of dhikr and the exhortation to it: "From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
The poor Emigrants came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "The wealthy have gone with the highest ranks and lasting bliss." He asked: "How is that?" They replied: "They offer Salat (prayer) as we offer it; they observe fast as we do; (and as they are wealthy) they perform Hajj and 'Umrah, and go for Jihad, and they spend in charity but we cannot, and they free the slaves but we are unable to do so." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Shall I not teach you something with which you may overtake those who surpassed you and with which you will surpass those who will come after you? None will excel you unless he who does which you do." They said: "Yes, please do, O Messenger of Allah" He (ﷺ) said, "You should recite: Tasbih (Allah is free from imperfection), Takbir (Allah is Greatest), Tahmid (Praise be to Allah) thirty-three times after each Salat."
Riyad as-Salihin 1418
Abu Salih, the narrator from Abu Hurayrah, when asked about the manner of these remembrances, said: 'He says: Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar, until the total of all of them is thirty-three.' It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and Muslim added in his narration:
The poor amongst the emigrants returned to the Messenger of Allah (may peace upon him) saying: Our brethren, the possessors, of property have heard what we have done and they did the same. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: This is Allah's Grace which He gives to whom He wishes.

This is among the hadiths indicating the virtue of specific dhikr tied to an action. It has been mentioned to us previously that some dhikr is absolute and some is restricted, and this is one of the restricted ones. The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is that the poor among the Muhajirun came complaining to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), saying: "The people of wealth have outpaced us. They pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but they have an abundance of wealth, meaning an excess, which they give in charity, and they perform Hajj, 'Umrah, and strive in the path of Allah." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) directed them to a matter, saying: "Shall I not inform you of something that if you do it, those who come after you will not catch up with you, and by which you will be ahead of those who come after you?" They said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You glorify Allah, you praise Allah, and you magnify Allah after every prayer thirty-three times," meaning you say Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times, which makes ninety-nine. Then they did that, but the wealthy heard about it and did the same, so they became equal to them in this dhikr. So the poor returned to the Messenger (may the prayer and peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, our brothers, the people of wealth, have heard what we did, so they did the same", and it seemed they wanted something else that would be exclusive to them. So he said:
That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He pleases. ذلك فضل الله يؤتيه من يشاء
Sunan Ibn Majah 1973Sahih (Darussalam)
In this hadith, among the benefits is first, the eagerness of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to compete in good, and that each of them loves to outpace the others. And among the benefits of this hadith is that this dhikr—Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times—is prescribed after the prayers. It has come in another hadith that the hundred is completed by saying La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. And this is one of the characteristics of dhikr after prayer. And among the characteristics of dhikr after prayer is that you say Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar twenty-five times, so the total is one hundred. And among its characteristics is that you say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times, which makes one hundred. And among its characteristics is that you say Subhan Allah ten times, Alhamdulillah ten times, and Allahu Akbar ten times; you do this once and that once, because all of it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). And among the benefits of this hadith is the broad-mindedness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding review and discussion, because he (peace and blessings be upon him) seeks the truth wherever it is, and the truth is with him, but he pleases the hearts of people and clarifies things to them. And among the benefits of the hadith is that when Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) bestows a favor upon someone, it is His favor which He grants to whom He wills, and He will not be unjust with this favor to anyone. So if He enriches this one and impoverishes this one, it is His favor which He grants to whom He wills, and this is not injustice, but rather it is His favor which He grants to whom He wills. Likewise, if Allah grants knowledge to one and does not grant it to another, this is from His favor. So the favor is in the hand of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), which He grants to whom He wills. And among the benefits of this hadith is also that the wealthy among the Companions, like the poor, are eager to do good and compete in it. For this reason, they did what the poor did, so they began to glorify, praise, and magnify Allah after every prayer thirty-three times. And Allah is the One who grants success.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : No, ten times.

The questioner : The total is thirty.

The Shaykh : The total is thirty, yes.
