The questioner : If a woman applies some foods to her face for the purpose of removing spots or for the clarity of the skin, such as: lemon, tomato, and cucumber, what is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding this act in your view, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : What I see is that there is nothing wrong with it.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : Because Allah says: And there is no defiling or impurifying in using these foods on the face such that it would be said that it is not permissible, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade using bones for cleaning oneself, as they are the provision of our brothers from the jinn, and the scholars have explicitly stated the prohibition of cleaning oneself with foods. Wiping the face with them is not of this category, because the face is the most noble of a person's limbs. So if these things are used on it, either to remove a defect like spots or to increase beauty, I do not know of any harm in this. The original ruling is permissibility until evidence arises to prohibit it. However, if it is possible to do this with other oils, that is better and more appropriate, because someone might say: using foods for this involves some extravagance and transgression, because foods are for eating and not for wiping faces and adorning and beautifying. So if one turns away from them to other things that achieve the purpose, that is more appropriate.
