The Shaykh’s explanation of the ruling on uncovering the face and hands, and that there is no evidence for the obligation of covering them, and his mention of some of the evidence indicating this.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We say: If it were established in the Shari'ah that it is obligatory for a woman to cover her face and hands, then it would not matter to us after that whether we call it an 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered) or what we call it; the important thing is that it is obligatory to cover this face and hands, if a text were established to that effect. But there is no text with us regarding the obligation of a woman covering her face and hands. On the contrary, we have many texts showing that life in the Salafi (the earliest generations) era that existed during the time of the Prophethood and the Message was such that women used to uncover their faces; their faces were visible to men, and their hands were visible to men. In *Sahih al-Bukhari* (al-Bukhari):
A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was sitting with his Companions around him, and she said: O Messenger of Allah! I have offered myself to you. أن امرأة جاءت إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو جالس وحوله أصحابه ، فقالت : يا رسول الله !! إني وهبت نفسي لك
, the narrator said: and he is the noble Companion Sahl ibn Sa'd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him):
lowering his eyes and putting his hand on his forehead فخفض رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بصره فيها ورفعه وخفضه
Mishkat al-Masabih 2929
, he began to look at her, and she was standing waiting for the Messenger's (peace and blessings be upon him) response to her. When she did not find any desire from him, she remained silent. Then a man from the group stood up and said:
O Messenger of Allah, marry me to her. He said: Do you have anything? He said: No, except this waist-cloth. He said: Seek even an iron ring. He said: I cannot find one. He said: Do you have anything of the Qur'an? He said: Yes. He said: I have married her to you with what you have of the Qur'an.
. The point is: When the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze to her and lowered it, was he looking at her black headscarf? No, so she was uncovered, and the Companions saw her, and that man desired her and said: "Marry me to her." This is one of the many hadiths indicating that life at that time did not have the complexity that exists today.
